Humboldt’s Friday Fishing Report 11/25/2016


Reports

Oceans:

Dungeness Crab – Dungeness crab reports have been good outside of Humboldt Bay when conditions have allowed. Decent sizes and quality too.

North of the Sonoma-Mendocino county line is scheduled to open on Dec. 1. 2016. Commercial fishermen are allowed a 64-hour gear setting period before the season opens, gear can be set at 8 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 28.

Rivers: 

River flows have been on the rise for all local rivers and conditions have not be great for fishing but good for the fish! Winter steelhead should start to run and there are some reports of decent fishing on most rivers.

Chetco Chinook/ King Salmon reports have been slow with increased flows, although new fish are entering the system. Roe and plugs have been most effective. Steelhead should be making their way soon.

Smith  Chinook/ King Salmon reports have been really slow and reports of new fish entering the system.  Steelhead should be making their way soon.

Trinity- This week fishery crews reported 14 redds (1,574 total for the year) in the Reaches from Lewiston Dam to Cedar Flat.  The majority of Chinook Salmon have completed their spawning in the mainstem Trinity River. Coho salmon have been seen moving upstream and should begin spawning soon. There are reports of Chinook, Coho and Steelhead. Flies, plugs, and side-drifting have been working for Steelhead when conditions are good.

Fish continue to enter Trinity River Hatchery at a slow pace this season.
Total combined Chinook decreased slightly from 324 (11/05-11/11) to 296 (11/12-11/18).
Total combined Coho increased from 16 (11/05-11/11) to 52 (11/12-11/18) .
Total combined Steelhead increased from 59 (11/05-11/11) to 83 (11/12-11/18). 

Mad River – Some reports of Steelhead trickling in, although there are forecasts for high flows in the next several days. More Steelhead should be making their way soon.

Van Duzen- no reports and forecasts for high flows in the next several days.

Eel River/South Fork – The fishing has been sporadic along the Eel with reports of more fish entering the system with increased river flow. Forecasts for high flows in the next several days. Plugs and bait have been effective.
